DescriptionIntimately scaled, abstract metal sculpture with dark patina. The base and the vertical, elongated forms which emerge like stems from the base retain traces of modeling. From the four stem-like elements rise and separate, converging in a spiraling mass of circular shapes and angular extensions.Gallery Label
Joseph Goto was an Abstract Expressionist sculptor known for improvisational compositions of welded steel. Untitled is an excellent example of Goto's early work, characterized by small-scale, expressive forms.

In Untitled, Goto uses the welding torch to create uneven, expressive surfaces in much the same way as Abstract Expressionist painters such as Willem de Kooning or Jackson Pollock would build up the surfaces of their canvases.  Like the American sculptor David Smith (1906-1965), whom he admired, Goto approximates drawing in space with the meandering, linear network of metal of Untitled.
