Provenance

Mr. and Mrs. N. Battle (1915–1995) and Jean (nee Imogene Scott, (1917–1991), Hales, Indialantic, FL, by 1976; [1]

Their gift to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 1976.

[1] Mr. N. Battle Hales worked as an attorney with the Department of Agriculture between 1941 and 1969.  He relocated to the Kansas City area and married Imogene Scott Richardson in 1969. Hales accepted a position working as an attorney for the U. S. State Department embassies in Europe and Asia.  Between 1970 and 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Hales lived in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Israel, and Lebanon. After returning to the United States, the Hales settled in Indialantic, Florida in the mid-1970’s. It is likely these objects were acquired between 1969 and 1974 while the Hales were overseas.
