To arrive at a finished work, artists often produce preliminary studies that examine their subject from various vantage points. Joseph Stella made more than 25 studies of the Brooklyn Bridge from multiple perspectives in a variety of media. This pair of crayon drawings captures the engineering marvel’s soaring masonry and web of cables. The drawings also evoke the dizzying experience of crossing its span. Stella returned to the bridge for inspiration throughout his career, drawn to its power as a metaphor for the modern age.
