This notebook page details some of the technical aspects of the construction of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen’s Shuttlecocks. Its notations that indicate measurements contrast with the inherent whimsy of the larger study that hangs nearby. Sketches like this one are often precursors to even more precise renderings that engineers rely upon to fabricate a final piece. The artists used this sketch to work out many details. The drawing at the upper left of this sheet, however, reveals that the structure of a birdie’s feather remained a question.
