DescriptionAbstract landscape with, in foreground, broad areas of blue and green; beyond, in middle distance, three buildings with peaked roofs, and a smaller, shedlike structure at right; above, a horizontal "V" of birds, center, against a bright blue sky.Gallery LabelIn Houses, Stonington, Maine, the foreground passages of blue and green may make us wonder-are we looking at Stonington from land? Or are we at sea? John Marin filled the page with transparent and opaque washes that create indistinct shapes. The brightly colored houses in the middle of the page are our only relief from the dynamic and uncertain perspective of Marin's composition.
Look closely to notice where Marin scraped into the paper to create the windows of the house at the left and how he used dry, dark strokes to frame his scene.
