A prolific silver workshop of the English Arts and Crafts Movement, the studio of Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr blended simplified medieval and Renaissance styles with exceptional craftsmanship.  Their output included a large body of commissioned presentation pieces such as this basin, probably an anniversary gift.  The form and ornament of the basin derive from opulent silver rosewater basins made in 16th- and 17th-century England.  Encircled by a Tudor rose border, the center serves as the ground for a fanciful armorial consisting of a shield and an armored helmet with a dragon's head crest.
