DescriptionLarge, round silver dish with wide rim and shallow bowl. Outer edge of rim encircled by a narrow band of braided silver wire. Inner edge of rim decorated with repeating band of leafy vines, flowers, and fruit. Raised center boss bepicting coat of arms, profile of an armor helmet, and profile of a dragon's head decorates bottom of bowl. Inscription "I was wrought for Willoughby Arthur Pemberton and Rugh his wife in the Year of our Lord 1905" encircles center boss.Gallery LabelA prolific silver workshop of the English Arts and Crafts Movement, the studio of Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr blended simplified medieval and Renaissance styles with exceptional craftsmanship. Their output included a large body of commissioned presentation pieces such as this basin, probably an anniversary gift. The form and ornament of the basin derive from opulent silver rosewater basins made in 16th- and 17th-century England. Encircled by a Tudor rose border, the center serves as the ground for a fanciful armorial consisting of a shield and an armored helmet with a dragon's head crest.
