The Great Depression may have influenced this lithograph by John Williams Taylor. As the economic hardship of the 1930s hit the United States, depictions of toiling Mexican peasants gained popularity. As the world rapidly changed around them, many Americans valued these images as symbols of a simpler world. Taylor’s laborer, with his knees and back bent under the weight of his load of adobe bricks, may also represent the great burdens borne by Mexico’s working class.
